Which functional requirements for regional data platforms?

The central role of multimodal mobility data is reflected in the implementation of data management strategies and the deployment of dedicated tools to achieve operational and financial objectives.

Regions have many functional needs related to the management of multimodal mobility data, whether for schedule or real-time data. Very often, the link between the different needs is not clearly identified, which results in the lack of appropriate tools to manage the entire data stream.

The first need of Regions is to collect data from the various targeted networks:

  • 🚍 Intercity coaches
  • 🚌 School buses
  • 🚉 Regional express trains
  • 🚖 Other modes: On-demand transport, boats, shared mobility, etc.
  • 🚎 Possibly urban networks not operated by the Region

✍ Sometimes, you also need the possibility of directly creating schedule data for small networks.

Control and enrich data

For all of this data, it is important to be able to control its quality and generate reports detailling the errors. It is also important to enrich the data with addresses, accessibility data, prices, specific codes, etc.

For real-time data, the main requirements are to:

  • Monitor the availability of CAD/AVL and the quality of data reported in real time,
  • Synchronise schedule and real-time data,
  • Manage the identification of stops, lines and journeys for publicly broadcasted real-time data feeds.

Create a unified multimlodal mobility data repositories for regions

Regional Public Transport Authorities (PTA) define aggregation processes for both schedule and real-time data, in order to generat their multimodal mobility data repositories. These respositories, or shared reference systems, are becoming crucial for regional ticketing offers and/or sharing open data feeds with National Access Points (NAP).

Share the right data with each consumer

For any regional PTA, it is essential to publish, in the right data standards, its schedule data (in GTFS and/or NeTEx) and its real-time data (in GTFS-RT and/or SIRI) to:

  • The regional trip planner to feed the mobile app and the website,
  • The regional ticketing system,
  • Data analysis and change tracking tools,
  • The regional Open Data portal,
  • The National Access Point,
  • Feedback to CAD/AVL or school buses management systems.

Support

And, obvisously, Regional Public Transport Authorities have the key role to support all their data producers: local data teams, public transport operators, etc.
