SIRI European profile: what is it?

The Europoean Passenger Information Profile for SIRI has just been published. It bears the name of EPIP-RT. As it is brand new, we are walking you through potential consequences for your real-time data broadcast.

SIRI and its national profiles

πŸ“š SIRI norm & national profiles

The SIRI norm consists of numerous volumes, called parts. Each one focuses on a specific service for real-time data to describe the current status of transport services (e.g. estimated timetable, facility monitoring, vehicle monitioring, etc.).

Find out more about SIRI

πŸ“•/πŸ“™ A SIRI profile is a subset of the norm that is the translation of a consensus on the choice of concepts, attributes contained in SIRI and/or types of data exchange (e.g., the French profile focuses on passenger information and data sharing via the National Access Point for transport data). Until very recently, the only profiles of SIRI were national or local profiles (e.g., French national profile).

In Europe, we now have a SIRI profile

πŸ“˜ πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί The European SIRI profile is a subset of the norm that facilitates exchanges between European countries, whether they are neighbouring or not.

Just published, the European profile for SIRI is called European Passenger Information Profile Real-Time (EPIP-RT). It includes the following services of SIRI:

  • πŸ•™ Estimated Timetable (ET),
  • πŸš‹ Vehicle Monitoring (VM),
  • ⛓️‍πŸ’₯ Situation Exchange (SX),
  • πŸ›— Facility Monitoring (FM).

It does not mean that the other services are not supposed to be used. They will keep on being maintained and improved by CEN. You should keep on using them if it fits your use-cases. The choice was made to focus on the 4 main services for richer real-time passenger information across Member States.

Why a European profile?

Having a European profile, particularly shared by several National Access Points and Member States, makes it possible to:

  • ⏭️ accelerate the uptake of SIRI for open data at European level by offering a greatly reduced subset of the norm,
  • πŸ” create a common base of real-time passenger information and facilitate exchanges between different Member States,
  • πŸ“ˆ support the growth of National Access Points, the opening up of multimodal mobility data and the development of trip planners.

European profiles evolve regularly

In general, the European profiles also evolve to:

  • ✍️ keep up with changes in SIRI,
  • πŸ’ adapt to the evolving needs of Member States in their use of SIRI,
  • βž• include more and more information relevant to passengers, always keeping in mind exchange at the European level (e.g., situation exchanges).

OK, but is the European profile compatible with my local or national profile?

Yes! As it has just been published, it was built based on everything that already existed, including the French profile.

And, in any case, this does not change that:

  • Your national profile remains a subset of SIRI, just like EPIP-RT,
  • Which ensures de facto compatibility of the concepts used!
  • And all is only a matter of focusing on service your use-cases. ‡
