The regional data platform of Brittany (France)

15 transport operators, 2 data consumers, 1 regional data repository

The Brittany Region manages a regional data repository to bring together, on the same platform, multimodal mobility data from fifteen transport operators, soon to be twenty. The modes of transport currently include buses and will soon include boats. The data directly feeds different data consuming systems: the KorriGo trip planner, the BreizhGo ticketing system, and soon the future BreizhGo store and national access point.

How can this diversity of stakeholders be easily brought together in a single regional repository?

Automate data collection and aggregate it into a unified regional data platform

Each transport operator in the region feeds the regional repository itself by logging into its dedicated workspace in Chouette SaaS. Data imports can be done in GTFS or NeTEx, manually or automatically, and some networks can enter their schedule data directly into the SaaS product.

The upstream work of transport operators and regional operations are supervised by a project manager from the Brittany Region. The project manager has access to the regional working group, which provides a consolidated view of mobility data, as well as to all the individual workspaces of each transport operator.

Once the transport operators’ schedule data has been imported, checked, and automatically enriched, the 15 data sources are aggregated to form a unified regional data repository. This aggregation takes place automatically every day, as soon as new data is imported by the transport operators.

Checking and enriching data

The Brittany Region has set up numerous checks on a common basis for all public transport operators (PTO), who can add further checks in their workspace if they wish.

The checks are performed automatically on the PTO schedule data before it is integrated into the regional repository, allowing producers and the Brittany Region to monitor the quality of the data produced: missing fare zones, stops outside the Brittany region, incorrect information on routes, etc.

The data can therefore be updated before being published toward other stakeholders. Chouette SaaS provides numerous checks and regularly integrates new ones to cover a wide range of use-cases and data-related needs.

The Brittany Region has also set up a series of automatic data enrichment processes after each import: adding fare zones, grouping stops into a single large station, calculating the number of services per day, etc.

These automatic control and enrchiment operations can be parametrised at different stages of regional data production: import, finalization, aggregation, and publication.

Publishing the right data for each consumer

Several automatic publications are set up by the Brittany Region (either via public or private APIs) to various mobility data consumers, in GTFS and soon in NeTEx:

  • to KorriGo trip planners,
  • to the BreizhGo ticketing system,
  • soon to the future BreizhGo store,
  • and soon to the French National Access Points.

These publications are launched automatically after each aggregation of PTO schedule data into a single regional repository. For PTOs and for the Brittany Region, which oversees all operations, bringing all stakeholders together in a single data platform enables simple, efficient, and controlled data sharing in both GTFS and NeTEx.
